Patience, patience, patience along with some understanding and realistic expectations is at the top of the list when it comes to teaching children. I have had the great privilege of teaching children starting as early as two years old, if I include my daughter, but on average 5 to 6 years old is more common. I have had quite a few students who started at the age of 5 and took lessons until they started college. Some still come back for lessons during summer break.
Learning any instrument involves the intellect and developing physical skill and with any individual those are the greatest variables. I don’t like to say that teaching children is hard or easy, but it is what it is. As a teacher you have the task of breaking down the complex and making it understandable and attainable. It is the same as when you cut up your child’s food into small, bite size pieces for them. It also takes them longer, but they can do it.
