Most of the time the younger children ages 5 through 10 usually don’t have a preference as to what style of music they want to learn so I always recommend starting in a good method. What I mean by that is that it progresses easily and builds step by step so that what is learned in one step is used in the next.
Learning how to read and developing the basic connections is what’s important. So during the first lesson I quickly take the child through the routine info of the rudiments of music, the staff, types of notes etc… I make it a point to let them know not to worry about trying to remember everything but as they use the information they will remember it and know it. Then we move into the names of strings and frets, placing the fingers, picking the strings and putting it altogether in the following weeks.
